Why ask if you don't want to know?

MIL calls and leaves a message, “what can she get the children for Christmas?” She says she will call back on Tuesday. So Tuesday morning she calls. She starts the conversation asking about is there anything she could pick up for them. Since I was asked, I answered.
Then MIL says, “I didn’t get any of those items, I’m all done with Christmas shopping”.
Good for her, but why ask the question if you don’t want the answer?
