Amen to that! This is a holiday I wish more people would take seriously...I know people who have died or been wounded in the recent wars, as well as those that have served in other wars...friends, family members...and those of us who have never been in combat will never understand what they've done for us.
Thank you for your kind words Cindy. I'm proud to say I'm a veteran of the Nam era. I lost a dear friend back then, as well as others who post here or on other boards in iVillage have too I'm sure.
DH is named after a buddy of his Dads....a fellow Green beret who lost his life in Vietnam..it still scars my FIL horribly...they did 4 tours together and on the 4th my FIL actually watched his friend get his throat slit...he was in the jungle not 100 yards away when it happened..but he couldn't do anything, lest he get captured and killed himself...he was never rehabilitated after seeing such a thing either...and he's permanently mentally disabled now, so even keeping a strong relationship with his son has proved incredably difficult for him.
I have another friend who just came back from Iraq, army infantry. His humvee hit a roadside bomb and he lost his left leg from the hip down, was pronounced dead immediatly after the attack and woke up as they were zipping him into a body bag.
Those are some tough stories you mentioned. Especially the one about the guy who luckily awoke as they were about ready to discard him. My lord, that's brutal, but war is just that. Killing others before they get a chance to kill you. A time of peace throughout the world be great wouldn't it (my god, I sound like a Miss America wanna be don't I.......lol).
Always nice to see your radiant face grace the board lothiriel. Have a nice evening....I was just asked by a fellow vet I work with here if I was in the mood to stop and share a couple cold beers together before heading home. Hell yes!! Take care. I'm nuthin' but easy...:))

I, like you, have a great respect for our soldiers.
and I think we have a few Vets around here
So thank you!
As an AF vet I /salute all those in uniform presently, those who served our country and came home, and mostly those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
