Hi Ladies -

Dating a new and wonderful guy and having serious "dry condom" problems. He can't seem to tolerate the condom but for about 5 minutes at the time because it drys out. This is cuasing me to reevaluate our otherwise wonderful relationship. Some suggestions have been putting some lube inside the condom at the tip - but not all over becuase it may slip off? Suggestions, past experiences? Help - Thanks

To the OP - I feel for your situation, I sometimes find that condoms dry out and get realy uncomfortable. When I was a kid getting the 'safe sex' lectures from school etc I always wanted to be one of those PC guys that would say "Yay! Condoms, alright!" (faux Aussie accent), but alas, I hate 'em. Still, better to wear a condom than be celibate or a herpes virion production plant. I'd agree with Tish and say find a different brand or try a couple drops of lube in the tip as you said, just enough to keep the glans lubricated. If you're on an alternative method of BC (pill, IUD, Depro etc) and if you are confident that you are monogamous, than maybe you should both get an STD test and forgo the rubbers.

Reevaluating a relationship because of a dry condom? Huh? I don't get that.

Either put some lube in the tip, try lubricated condoms, or decide that he is disease-free and go without condoms - assuming that you have another form of contraception.

Have you checked the expiration date on them? Many times that has been reported as the culprit, so its always worth double checking in my opinion. There's so many different brands to use too, but if you're still having trouble, perhaps the doctor can help with suggestions as well.

Any medically approved lubricant for use with these will most likely not be oil-based, since oil-based lubes eat away at the rubber material, so for anyone else who may be reading this and not so familiar with it all, MAKE SURE you stick with what was as safe and only use it around the tip of the penis to prevent the condom from slipping off.

Whether or not your relationship is based upon sex, I still believe there are ways to work around this issue. VERY many message boards on ivillage that can help with this, so come on back and let us know if this has helped at all so far. Good luck!
