Food as Romance
I know this is not the usual type of question posted here but why not.
Would it impress you if a guy took you to his place and cooked for you, for a date? Would you be looking for the take out boxes? What type of food would be a good date meal, burgers or hot dogs on the grill as simple as cut up cheese some wine, music, etc.
OR Are you harder to please, something that took an hour or more prep time and cook for at least an hour in the oven/stove top, app, main course, dessert, the right wine, music etc.??
I copied what I most of what I posted on Quick and Easy for the how part, (feel free to add how to, as well) but here I was just looking for ideas as to what .....
PS for now I don't have a gal to cook for, and I like mostly the type you could get at Chili's, Friday's, Luby's, etc. Things I think might be harder, but still like Olive Garden, Red Lobster, a good steak restaurant.
I am a single guy who was recently told it would be in my best interest to learn to cook.
First I could eat better and cheaper at home, less take out or canned food, and second to woo women do something they don't want to do, perhaps something better, or just show you I am willing to help out.
Mom used to say get out of the way when she was cooking, and about all I seem to recall is her fear of bacon grease. Now she is gone, and I think it has been long enough I want to try some of her favorites.
You know it did not turn out when the dog does not even beg.

I think it would impress most women if their b/f or just a guy they've been dating were to cook them a nice meal. It doesn't have to be a fancy meal for most women. Of course hamburgers and hot dogs are great if they're not "dieting"....and usually best if done outside on a grill. (but you could also do them on a "george foreman" type indoor grill too.
I don't know if you have cable, but if you do and you get the food network, there are a lot of good shows on there that show simple recipes...things you can put together quickly, and then you get the exact recipe off their websites. There's on show called "Almost homemade" or something similar to that that shows how to take things like canned chicken broth and make a great soup out of it in just minutes. There's a new show starting next week....a guy who is NOT a chef who will show how to make simple recipes even if you don't know how to cook. You can also go to a library or bookstore and find lots of cookbooks like "cooking for one" that you can practice with, and always double the recipe if you have a guest. You can also get recipes off the computer if you don't have cable.....go to www.foodnetwork.com, or just search for "recipes". I'll bet iVillage has a recipe message board, too.
And you're also right about just learning to cook for yourself....it can be cheaper (not always, lol) and it's definitely healthier. You control the sodium (which most prepared and frozen things are LOADED with), less chemicals, and better tasting.
Cooking is not a mystery. If you follow the recipe with measurements given, step by step, you'll be surprised how easy it can be. Good luck.......and let us know if you start working on it.
Once you find some recicpes that you think turn out very well, start planning menus that you keep in mind for that special date night. Personally, I love when hubby and I have a night to ourselves at home and prepare a nice meal together. It gives us a chance to work together, talk about whatever, maybe sip on a glass of wine. It's also rewarding to sit down after all of that and enjoy what we have prepared. If you're on a date, you can even talk about the ingredients, other similar things you have cooked and how you figured out a way to tweak the recipe and make it even better. She will probably be impressed and might even add some of her own cooking secrets. If she doesn't seem interested in the cooking steps or recipes, let that part go. Not all women like to cook either ;-)
Sakura gave you some excellent resources for finding recipes. Also, when you watch cooking shows, you learn a little about how to "properly" baste something, or tips on keeping your cooking area clean and organized. I often look up recipes on the internet. Just type the food you are interested in cooking with the word recipe in your browser bar and you will usually get a lot of choices to look through. Of course, iVillage has a great Recipe Finder too!
Let us know when you try this out on a special lady and what the results were!
I'm not hard to please, if I don't have to cook it, I'm happy with whatever it is.

LOL I must rember that!
I was so excited about 6 months ago I called my sister to let her know I 'cooked steaks on the my new grill', she asked so what did I have with it, ---- long pause, hmm a fork and (I since did not feel like doing dishes so when I bought the steaks) a new pair of knives. --- a loud sigh on the other end pause then brother or no if you were here I'd smack you, just because, you can't just have JUST A STEAK --- it finally occurred to me oh I had the other one --- she said what?? I said yeah I bought a two pack ! I think she hung up, all this time I thought we just lost the connection.
LOL now I know why!!
That's why at a nice steak house they serve it with a small sprig of parsley, why waste good veggies on a man who is not going to eat it anyway. Sides are not even with the steak/entre' name, it is in fine print at the bottom or on the other page!
I'll give you credit for at least using a knife and fork and not doing the caveman
