"New Sex-Ed Guidelines for CA Schools (ABC News)

The new guidelines spell it out; fifth graders will learn about STDs, and middle school teachers will talk about rape and sexual assault, and in high school the curriculum includes information about condoms and the morning after pill."

What do you think about the new guidelines for sex ed for younger kids? Do you think it's a good idea to expand their discussion to include protection against STDs, rape, and sexual assault? In light of the recent scary statistics that 1 in 4 teen girls has an STD, do you think these guidelines will help?

Stephanie, I think it's great that they are broadening their guidelines for what they teach. The more tools and information kids have, the safer they will be. Education doesn't encourage them to try things that they wouldn't otherwise try ... but not being educated can lead them into some very dangerous situations.

I think they should have sex ed each year between 5th and 12th grade. Having the information repeated can only raise their awareness and reinforce the importance of the topic.

I'm sad that is has to be the schools job to take on a task that should be shouldered by the parents.
