Of course it can work......IF you have the right therapist (sometimes you have to try a few different ones, because they all have different methods) and if you WANT it to work.
It only helps if you want it to. Most people can figure out their own problems. A therapist is there to help draw out the answers that you need. They guide you in a positive way. If you both are open to a therapist then yes it will help. but if you both are not open to finding a solution to your problem a therapist might be your answer.
Best thing my wife and I ever did. We have a great therapist. She helps us with all aspects of our relationship just not sex but she is great in that area too. You may have to try a couple to find the right one for you. I have no problem talking to anyone. It;s my wife that has the hard time so it was more important that she be more comfortable with the therapist. Even after years she still turns red as a beat when we have to talk about " certain subjects". She seems only to be able to talk about sex with the therapist there if I try to talk about it alone she always tries to stop the conversation.
So, I would go to you family Dr to get a recommendation. Call the therapist on the phone. Ask a lot of questions. Try to weed them out before you go a waste an hour. Ours is a woman. 35 years of experience with just couples and a sub speciality in human sexuality. My wife "loved" her in the first 5 minutes. Basically what she says goes!

I've not been to therapy, but here are a couple of articles that you might find helpful in seeking out a therapist:
