Baby steps of asserting myself

I feel a little good about even my tiny stiffening of my backbone today. Saw AP for a few minutes. Told him that I had been really upset every time he called because I wasn't sure where we stood and whether I was speaking to friend or foe. He said, "It will always be friend, not matter what happens."
I looked at him and shook my head and said, "No honey, I'm sorry, that isn't the case. In the end, you will either make good on your promises to me, or you will cut me to ribbons. There is no in between."

>>>""No honey, I'm sorry, that isn't the case. In the end, you will either make good on your promises to me, or you will cut me to ribbons. There is no in between.""<<<
Why does he have all the power and control?! Why can't it be: "No honey, that isn't the case because if you don't make good of your promises to me, I'll cut you from my life, and will always think of you as a lying loser whom I don't ever want to see again!".
"People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within."
