When do you give up on a book??

So you start reading a new book...and you're just not getting into it...when do you call it quits?

Hi there!

I usually give the book about 50 to 100 pages to get into it. If it's just not going to happen, I skip to the end to see what happened and then either give it away (if it's mine) or return it to the library promptly.

There are too many books out there waiting to be read to waste your time on a one you're not enjoying!

I give myself 2-3 chapters.

I give myself a couple of chapters before I decided to stop. Sometimes I'll flip through the book to see if it gets any better along the way. I won't force myself to finish a book if I just can't get into it. There are too many books on my TBR piles than to force myself to read something I just don't want to. On occasion I will return to a book that I had originally set aside. I did that with Possession by A.S. Byatt, because I thought the beginning was very slow going and I was struggling with it. I set it aside for a few months, then went back to it and I was glad that I did, because it has become one of my favorite books.

I've only done it once and it was because it wasn't my book - it was a friend's and she was leaving to go across the country and wanted it, so I just gave it back to her without finishing it at that time.

don't worry about the cl thing, that's fine.

well or me it depends on the author, if it's one that i like i will try it much longer than an author i have never read before. usually though if i can't get into it within the first 50 pages or so, i give up.
