Teach your child to LIKE reading

My 5-year old son is a very good reader but he tells me, "Reading is not fun." How do you teach your child to like reading and not look at it as a task? He likes when I read to him but does not read on his own for pleasure.

Just keep reading to him....Lots of fun books....with pictures....He may develop an interest....Also look for books that HE is interested in...Books about his favorite things....To me he seems a bit young to be reading on his own.....I am thinking it may come in a year or so....

i agree with ruth, keep reading to him. when my kids were little i used to read them sesame street books. they loved the characters on the show and enjoyed the stories. so, like ruth said find books in whatever he is interested in. with my grandson it's thomas and friends. he will get the hang of it if the books are simple and he will learn to recognize the words.

hang in there, mom.

Browse Childrens section of Library, Story times at Library, Bookstores, Read and talk about what you have read to child, draw pictures of it....See a film of a book you have read...Hugs, Ruth

Do lots of incidental reading- street signs, grocery lists, recipes, just sneak it in whenever you can.
