Double standard in the workplace

As much as I try to deny it, there's still that double standard at work, isn't there?
Men are still viewed differently than women, in general. Sure, not everyone is guilty of this but it only takes af few.

Right now I'm having this situation where I'm working my rear off and this guy is sort of riding the wave with me. He's intelligent, I'll give him that, but he's a slacker. Yet, when it's go-time, he tries to take the credit. Usually I'm good at over-shadowing him so it doesn't look like he's done all the work but I'm to the point where I am about to lose it on him. I have a meeting with the bosses today and I plan on discussing this. It just sucks because I like to beleive that your hard work and dedication are what really come through but apparently, sometimes you have to work even harder to make sure of it.

There's also this other guy on my floor (different department) that always makes comments about how I look. Usually it's just stuff like, "oh, you look nice today" but sometimes, he's just so blatantly staring at my chest that I want to just tell him to take a picture because it looks just the same as the last time you stared at it.

Hmm... maybe I've got a little bit of a feminism streak going today but it's all just really frustrating.

Can anyone else identify?

Have you read "Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office"? It talks about the same issues: that women focus on working really hard, while men focus on networking, and the frustrations that come when the women's hard work isn't given the recognition it should. I really like that book; it had some good points.

That's definitely a plus to working in a school with mostly women.

I definitely understand that. That's another one of my work gripes. Luckily, I work in a group where the women are willing to stick together and back each other up but my career hasn't always been like that. Women can be brutal.

I can relate.
I work in a company the least to saty about is SEXIST!
They are mostly single nerdy looking jerks.
They never hired one female programmers. For them , female can work as receptionists, secretaries, graphic designers and project managers sometimes to deal with the clients. My team is an all male team. I ask one of them to do smething and he says it is illogical. The other PM who is a guy comes and ask the same thing and he doesnot have any problem. It gets done on the spot!! I think men have issues with women making decisions in the Technology sector. Women should take appointments and make phone calls all day:~P

Ugh, I hear ya. Double standard no doubt. My incoming class is 100 people, 85 of them women. I am not a competitive person, I just do my thing and work as hard as I can for me and its incredibly difficult to deal with all these women.

For me its about credibility and appearance than the male-female double standard thing. There was this 20/20 special probably 10 years ago now about how beautiful people have more 'cred' than average people. This is so true its ridiculous and its gotten worse since that showing.
