how do you all handle company events...

...as a single. I know I posed this issue on another Ivillage board, but would like to get more opinions, (the people who responded on the other board have been completely supportive too)
I wondered how the singles here would feel about a company picnic, on company property during work hours, if you knew you would be the only...1. American female 2. one of the only women, period (my company is easily 90% male) 3. the only one without children 4. The only unmarried one. this on site event is families/spouses/SO's, none of which I have. I have applied for, and am getting, both the day of the picnic off, and the day before, I am that uncomfortable at the thought of this. I said this on the other Ivillage board, and I will say it here too...isn't it one thing to avoid company X-mas parties, now I have to avoid on site family/spouse picnics too? My company gets more and more ultra conservative every year, and every year, there are less and less people like me, American single female with no children, (can we say anomaly?) Not only this, but every year, there is more and more of a caste system, more and more high dollar executives and VP's, giving themselves promotions, no more middle managers, then the people at a lower "caste" level, and these many executives now, will not even return a smile or hello, from the ones at my level. I used to go alone to these parties and picnics, but in light of how things are evolving here, I just am NOT comfortable at the thought of these events any longer.
thanks for listening.

To keep the peace and avoid politics, I usually go to the work events -- even if I just show up for an hour and then make an exit. However, if you have already decided to take the day off, just tell people you've made vacation plans and are sorry you'll miss the festivities.
Yes, I also hate being one of the few who shows up at these things sans boyfriend/husband/kids. It is uncomfortable. Thankfully, we only do a holiday party -- so I can live with it once a year.
AJ, enjoying life with C.
