Last night, one of my sisters called and said she was chatting with my youngest sister last night and found out that my mom and stepdad have been talking about moving about 2 or so hours south of where they are now to a house on a lake.

My roots are not tied to a geographical location. Wherever my family is feels like home to me. Like yourself, I do not have a family of my own yet. I have been fortunate in that my parents, siblings and I all live within an hour of one another. I can imagine that I would feel pretty out of sorts if a set of them up and moved, that would be weird.

I feel for your sister. I transferred after my sophomore year of high school too and it was a bumpy transition. It took my entire junior year to get comfortable with the new surroundings/people. I hope she has an easier go of it.

Maybe try looking at the perks that will come with their move. Are they going to be right on the water? Do you fish? Ski? Perhaps they'll get a boat. Think about dinners out on the patio at sunset or sipping on a nice glass of wine with the moon reflecting on the water . . . ahh, that sounds nice, doesn't it?

Gosh, I wish I had something I could call "roots." I don't, really. I now live in the St. Louis area, and have for the past 15 years, but I don't really call this place "home." I can definitely tell you that come graduation in December of 08, I'm not planning on staying.

Unfortunately, my family moved around a lot growing up. I went to a total of nine different schools (between elementary, middle and high schools), and lived in four different states. Not quite as dramatic as moving to another country like some people do, but still, I don't feel like I can call ANYWHERE home really.

If I had to pick one, it would be the northwestern Indiana area. I still visit from time to time. I don't know anyone there anymore, they've all moved on, and it's sort of run down, so I probably wouldn't move back anytime soon.

If I had my own family, those things might sound good to me.

I hope you don't think that I was aiming to diminish your feelings by attempting to focus on some positive points. That was not my intention at all.

Maybe they will change their minds? Is that a possibility? In short, I'm sorry. As I indicated in my post, I WOULD feel pretty out of sorts if anyone in my immediate family decided to move especially, if it were my parents. Is your little sister protesting the move at all being that she has two more years of school left?

My little sister is all for it.
