...that I have been in bed at 8:30 two nights in the past week, and I'll probably be in bed by then tonight, too?

That's not bad at all! It's nice to sneak away so early sometimes, plus given your very early start to the day, it's really not so early...

I have gotten in a bad habit of staying up late (11:30) and waking up about 7:30 (but it still somehow takes me 2 hours to get ready in the morning because I'm still sleepy.) I want to start getting into work earlier, so something will have to give way!

My mom's a teacher, too, and that sounds just like her schedule. I don't think it's an old maid thing, it's just your work hours.
I work from 4 in the afternoon until midnight, so lately I've been getting to sleep around 1:30 or 2, and waking up around 8:30 or 9. But it's not like I have a wild partying life! I tend to sleep a little less in the summer, but once winter comes, I can stay in bed till 11 or noon easily!

Well, I'm a bit of a night owl, though not as bad as my student days. I go to bed around midnight, usually, maybe 15-20 minutes later, then get up at 7. I should get a little more sleep, but it's actually enough for me to be functional. I was thinking about this yesterday when the guy next to me on the subway kept doing that falling asleep head bob thing. Before I moved to the city, I always felt that tired, even though I didn't get THAT much less sleep. Now I'm never tired on the bus in the morning, it's nice. I think it has more to do with the fact that I was always down and depressed about my living situation/commute. Could be the seasons, too, I don't know. Whatever it is, I hope it lasts!

Well, I went to bed at 11 last night, and slept until 8. So, apparently I need to go to bed earlier. :)

That's nine hours. That's pretty good, actually!

I can handle seven hours of sleep.

<< If I'm in bed by 8:30, then I usually am not asleep until an hour later.>>

Try not watching TV for 45 minutes before bed. I hear that can affect your ability to fall asleep quickly.

For getting up that early I don't blame you for going to bed at that hour. What's 5:30AM look like? LOL

I was just thinking - I got home from the office at 9PM last night, didn't go to bed until 3:30AM and was up at 7:30AM, I have bad sleeping habits.

I wish I had the discipline you are showing. Maybe I wouldn't be as cranky!

I get up at 5:40 and I try really hard to be IN bed by 10 (asleep by 11). I am constantly sleep deprived, as I really could use a solid 8 hours (I know some people are ok on less, I'm really not). Every few days I really like to try to get in bed before 9:30 (like you, I need an hour to fall asleep). I really think we all have our own natural rhythms and mine would definitely NOT involve going to bed at 10pm and waking up as early as I do, but it's not as bad as my sister who is a night owl, but works an early shift.

I say don't feel like an old maid. You have to do what gets you through the day. As a teacher, it's so hard to explain to others WHY I am so strict about bedtime, but I KNOW how it is to deal with 26 kids with little energy and it's not pretty and it's not fair to them. I do know I go to bed later than some of my fellow teachers, so you are definitely not alone. And you are at the beginning of the year- it's rough to get back in the routine. The first two weeks of our school year in July I was plain exhausted.

No worries! It doesn't make you lame.

Michelle

I have problems both getting to and staying asleep, and have found that a white noise CD works wonders.
