Let me offer another perspective. I see any relationship as the responsibility of both parties. The way you characterize your friend's situation makes it sound like she is the victim. I see she has the responsibility of taking care of herself and if she does not want the guy staying with her then she can tell him. We all have a choice. I believe if we see people as "poor" then we disempower them and do not recognize that they do have the wisdom and fortitude within to live their lives. It is a choice though.
I am not saying that he has responsibility as well but you already covered that in your post.
