Do you volunteer in your community? Do you help out at a local hospital or at your child’s school? What type of volunteering do you do and how do you fit it into your schedule?

I have been a volunteer for victims of sexual assualt for 3 years with the YWCA of South Hampton Roads Response Program.

Every Sunday morning from 8 AM to 1 PM, I man the 24/7 Hotline to assist those who may need our help. These can AMACS (Adults Molested as Children), recent victims and we also receive calls from the police or hospital if a victim is going in for a PERK (Physical Evidence Recovery Kit) exam. This enables us to send a volunteer to be with the victim throughout the examination, encouraging them into our programs free counselling, and give them information if they are pressing charges. Most victims are sexually assualted by aquaintances.

I am able to transfer the phone to my home/cell phone and take calls directly in my home.

It was one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.

I also volunteer as a beer server at the Boardwalk Art Show in Virginia Beach each year. The beer sales raise money for the local Contemporary Arts Museum, which this year brought the Magna Carta on display.

I am surprised with all these single women on this board that claim to have no life, no boyfriend, no hobbies - why they aren't volunteering more. Beats me?

I tend to volunteer alot- sometimes too much! I'll be taking tickets tonight at our community theater (small town) & am on the vestry board at my church. My job is actually nonprofit consulting, so I have to refrain from doing too much grantwriting for gratis. Another woman & I are bringing in a six week free Love & Logic parenting class for young parents.

I was really in need for help for many years, so now that I'm on my feet again I can never give back as much support & time as I was given by others. All I can do is show my appreciation through trying.

I'm curious to know what you (and others) do for work?

I work as an account executive. Basically, I'm in sales. That's how I make my money.

I totally forgot about the other 3 places I do volunteer work for. I am an Ambassador for our local Chamber of Commerce.

I am the depuy of Scholarships and Education for AFCEA. We organize a very big, local science fair where I go as a judge (ex-school teacher) , give scholarships to kids going to college studying engineering or science. In fact, I presented 2 scholarships at a HS last year. We give money to science teachers to fund classroom projects.

That sounds great...yeah, I was just wondering what you felt about the volunteer opportunities in your life, whether that filled some sort of need or want to help people or something of the like.

Time is a very precious commodity to me. I will gladly give of my money, usedcl othes and household donations to charity. But my time, NO. I have many other things to do besides, give away my time. Also my money is a tax deduction. Charities never turn down my money and donations. Volunteering isn't for everyone.
