Mother in law question

I would love some input. I have been married 20 years...I am not in a good marriage but this is about my m/i/l. When we were very fist married she stopped over very early in the morning before I had gotten dressed. I was just a young bride and I asked my new husband if he would ask her to call before stopping over (with the excuse I liked my house picked up first). That was the WRONG thing to do I shortly found out. Twenty years has passed and she will still not come without a special birthday invite etc. Several years ago I asked her why dont you come out and she said I dont feel welcome in your home..It crushed me, and I knew why she said that. I told her then you dont have to call if you just want to come out.
I am real tired of the game now and have just stopped going to her house without a "special invite"...they are all holidays now. My husband says I am acting very childish. I think its some kind of control thing on her part? The right thing would be to call her and invite them out on a regular basis..but being she is so into her church and her proper etique (sp) books..she is really into the right things to do in social things. Not in this situation though. Am I imaging this? Any brilliant ideas? Tress ve

I don't think your request was unreasonable at all.... and I'm sure that you even expect that from your closest girlfriends.
