That was a pretty good article. The one that confuses me is this one:
18. Consider the value of professional degrees and licenses. In some states these assets are marital property, and you are entitled to a share of their value.
I've never heard of such a thing. My ex intially said he felt entitled to alimony since I had a good career (I am a CPA) and my student loans aren't too bad, while he indebted himself to life with his student loans for a career that wasn't really paying off. He said he had counted on my income potential when making his decision. If the above is true (I don't think it is in my state) then he would have been right!
I'd say the #1 thing my ex and I did to divorce without going broke is negotiate all the terms ourselves (obviously not everyone can do this). We made the decisions and then let the attorney's document it all and provide legal advice. Laywers are very expensive if used as negotiators IMHO.
