I am just beginning to contemplate divorcing my husband. We don't have a lot of "cash" per say, but we do have a fair amount of equity, plus we've funded things like his 401k to the max. I know that if I tell him I want a divorce he will be so incredibly angry that he will do NOTHING to make this easy. (like sell assets to come up with the money for me to get my half). I don't even need "everything" I'm entitled to. But I'd like some of it.
How do people cope with a situation like this? Can a court "make" him sell assets?
I'm thinking of beginning to stash away as much cash as I can, does anyone have any other suggestions? I do not intend to screw him in anyway, I'd just like a little of what I've helped build over the years (we both earn about the same amount and have always co-mingled our assets).
Also, he does all the financial/book keeping.

The court most definitely can make him pay you your half of the marital assets.

This is key.... definitely make sure he doesn't intimidate you. First is so wise to this stuff :)
I think for me, if my X would say something to me like " I can have everything and you get nothing " or " I will take the kids " I wouldn't react, I would simply call my lawyer and ask for sure. Once I got a knowledge of what was invoved for real, I was much more confident in not letting him get to me.
Hugs to you and good luck :)
