Sweetie, first find a lawyer. I suggest asking around to find out the name of the lawyer the other lawyers are afraid of. He left you, you have more cards than you know. Especially under these circumstances. Right now you are going to have to focus on this. I know it seems like falling apart right now is easy, but you are going to have to ignore the pain right now. Do not agree to anything with your husband. Do not move out. Go immediately to a lawyer. Make sure you get a motion filed that prevents him from taking any assets, and from liquidating any assets. Look for all the money. Savings, checking, Swiss bank accounts, safety deposits, etc. If your attorney says it is OK, change all the locks on the doors. It is easier than it sounds, and not so expensive. You can do it yourself. I need to remind you that half of everything he owns is most likely yours, despite what he may have led you to believe. Chances are pretty good that you are not as broke as you think you are. He thinks he waited for your moment of weakness and is counting on you rolling over and giving up. Prove him wrong. And no matter how much he begs, do not ever take him back.

Back when I was in law school, I used to do social security appeals.

Thought I'd chime in here since I know a little something about disability in IN. My mother applied for it a few years ago so we've been thru the process.

Musiclover's right, you need to get a letter from your doctor stating you can't work to apply. You also have to be off work for a year before you can apply. After filling out alot of paperwork, they'll have their own drs look at you and see what they have to say. If they think it's possible that you can eventually go back to work you may be turned down at first. You can always appeal it--I've seen people get it on appeal. It's worth a shot--worse they can do is say no.

As for this being a hard state to get disability? I've seen some people get it easily that I wouldn't have thought would, and vice versa. I think it depends on the dr and the documentation you have. When filling out paperwork--tell them everything about your health. It's a pain, but the more details you have there, the better your chance of them thinking you should get it.

Also, if you know someone who's been thru the process already, ask them to help you fill out paperwork--there's alot to fill out!

And as for Social security--there's no rule that says you can't retire before your husband does. You've been married long enough to get benefits based on his income over the years. That would be another venue to look into.

Hope that helps!
