The housemate part is a good idea. If I needed more help I would consider renting a room to a college student that could help financially plus with housework and babysitting.
I don't think I would want more kids in the house but I can see how that could work for sisters or people whose kids got along.
My sister and I actually did this for almost 2 years.
I worked an early shift...and she got my kids up and to school...then I watched her son while she worked evening shift.
I actually had my garage converted in a room big enough that she had a "sitting" area as well as sleeping space for her and her son if she wanted some him just with him.
When I first was separated, I was scared that I couldn't make the mortgage and I had another single mom come in for two months. I didn't care for it. We were both going through emotional stuff and her idea of sharing a home meant that we were buddies, too. I think it could work out really well, but with some clear house rules.
Pretty cool.
