What do you think? Do you care much? (edited to add: Ok, so I should spell check my subject line a little better. *blushing*)

Here's something I've been noticing and it's interesting to me.

J absoloutely has harped and harped about how he hoped they'd throw the book at her. He's big on the fact that "what she did ends up hurting the little guy"

I don't think they proved she did anything bad enough to go to jail over, but I always feel like jail should be reserved for people who might actuall physically harm someone. I think we overuse it, and the judicial system could stand to be a bit more creative in their discipline.

Anyway, J is going to be thrilled with her jail time, and think it's not enough. And I'll keep my mouth shut. And I've heard this from other men too. And I overheard a co-worker here at work (when he got online I am guessing) say "Yes! She's got FIVE months!"

I haven't heard many women harping on this issue, and they've been supportive when it's been mentioned.

So... WHY do men HATE MARTHA!!!??? What's so freaking intimidating about her?

I have heard that she's a really rude "witch", but why's that reason to hope she goes to jail?

I can't stand that woman! I hate how she talks. It's such an arrogant tone. She makes out like all those ideas she presents on her shows are her ideas. Yeah, she's crafty, but I'd much rather watch someone else. Let little miss perfect come down to a more realistic level. Jail might be good for her.

While I agree - big time - that we overuse jail as a punishment - I don't think hitting Martha in the pocket book is the answer, as she won't notice it. What she did was illegal. If *I* did what she did, or you did what she did - we would be in jail. Instantly. So therefore, I think Martha ought to go, too.

However, I am willing to bet (hmmmm . .. wonder if I can . . . might have to check the sports books! LOL) that she doesn't serve one day in jail. I am willing to bet she either wins on appeal - or is granted "time served" or house arrest or SOMETHING. I think an INCREDIBLE punishment for her would be community service - specifically - working with Habitat for Humanity. That would help the "little people" immensely - and it would be good for her to be face to face with people who desperately lack the NECESSITIES, let alone the EXTRAS she is so concerned with.

And although I think she can be incredibly snotty - I love her line of stuff at Kmart! LOL And I've made numerous projects of hers and tried out several of her recipes - and they have all turned out wonderfully. And I like her magazine, too.

D hasn’t said much about it at all. I don’t think he has much of an opinion on the matter.

Me, while I think what she did was wrong, I think like you, that jail is better suited for violent or harmful criminals, and that she would have been better punished with a very hefty fine. Something that would cut deep into her wallets.

As it stands, her stock is going up. Go figure.

If she does go to jail - it would be federal - where the guys that commit "white collar" crimes go - and would be pretty darned posh and also minimum security. While I agree that jail is better suited for harmful and violent criminals - no violent criminal will be getting off for lack of space due to Martha.

And I forgot to mention - TT feels the same way I do.

So you're saying she'll get a comfortable cell to decorate as she pleases with things her fans will send her no doubt, three square meals a day, exercise facilities and the latest books and magazines AND her stock is going up?

wow...some punishment ;)

Community Service is an excellent way to go...

can you picture her in a little orange jumper picking up garbage on the side of the interstate?

I prefer to think of her in a little orange jumpsuit on top of a house hammering a tar shingle roof on . . . . LOL. Since she is such an expert at decorating them . . . let's see if little Ms. Smart Alec can BUILD ONE! LOL

And in jail - - - I can imagine her sitting at the lunch table with the Mafia wives, discussing how to decorate their cells, and how to decorate their homes when they get out - to incorporate the "simplicity and clean lines" of the prison into their home decor. And yes, I expect she would be INCREDIBLY comfortable in prison - she would have to get special treatment and protection because think of the women in there who probably despise her! LOL

ROTFLMAO! Ok, that was low . . . but I couldn't resist!

And do you think her stock is going up because of all of the huge sales on all of her products? The ENTIRE Martha Stewart line is 25% off at Kmart this weekend (like Kmart needs to off it now that she's been sentenced or something????) PERFECT timing! We move into our house next weekend and I'll need new sheets for the boys' beds and the guest bedroom! And towels for the 1/2 bath . . . . Maybe I can get some paint for the family room? LOL

While I do think Martha has been portrayed in the media and by all accounts as a very selfish person, I do see a good side to her. She is an American icon for an independent, talented, self-made woman. Her company employs many women and has a positive influence on women in our country. Her work has been an inspiration for many people, including myself.

I do think she did something illegal and she knew she did it. And she was wrong to cover it up and coerce her employees to do the same. I am sure that if she could turn back the hands of time she would do that.

The irony is that her self-centered nature made her remain in denial about the charges and she did not give them adequate attention. I followed her case in the media and I was very surprised at how she chose her personal attorney to represent her case. He was obviously not well prepared to handle it and did a poor job in my opinion. Mark Geragos might have been a better choice.

When I see what the implications for her charges bring - that is - she has lost the helm of her company and is going through a scary time - I shake my head and think it is too harsh.

I read far more criminal stories on Wall Street that actually hurt many people. Look at what the executives of Enron have done for so many employees - creating heart break and shattering careers. And look at what the dodos of Tyco have done - ripping off millions of dollars from their companies and cheating stock holders and acting with no remorse.

Yet those people have better attorneys and will probably not suffer nearly as much as Martha. I think that is a bigger shame.

At any rate, perhaps this will be a blessing in disguise for our dear Martha. Hopefully she will learn to take time to smell the roses, enjoy her daughter more and realize there is more to life than board meetings, stock values and money. I am quite sure that something good will come out of this.

I don't really think she can appeal because there was nothing to appeal. So she will take 5 months in jail, 5 months house arrest and a year in probation. I do wish her godspeed for this hard time in her life.
