Need Help With My Profile

I checked out the OLD website and Jennie’s first profile. It sounded something that I had written. The advice she was given seemed to indicate that your profiles need to tell specific things about you and what makes you different from other women. So, I gave it some thought, and I tried to think of things about me that are unique. Here are some things I would like people to know about me, that I feel are unique:

- I like to watch sports; football, baseball and basketball; basketball being my favorite; huge Bulls fan – also a Bears and White Sox fan, as well. I grew up in a family of all girls, so dad taught us to watch and appreciate sports. I think I know more about sports, especially basketball, than the average woman.

- I like movies; scary movies and thrillers are my favorite. I also like dramas. My favorite movies are Halloween, Forest Gump, Rainman and Terms of Endearment.

- I ADORE Clint Eastwood movies -- all of them -- even his westerns. His Dirty Harry movies are my favorite. I have a collection of all of his Dirty Harry movies on DVD. I can recite Clint's famous "do you feel lucky punk" line from the original Dirty Harry movie, word for word. I have a few of his westerns (Hang 'Em High and a Fist Full of Dollars are my favorite). I have been told that this is very unusual for a girl to like these kind of movies, but I guess I'm just different.

- I LOVE music (probably more than the average person). I ALWAYS have music on. My favorite thing go do (still is to this day – even though I’m almost 40) is to go to a concert. I adore live music – there’s nothing like it. I totally lose myself in the music. My favorite kind of music is rock – 80’s hairband rock, in particular, but also new music, and a bit of classic rock. I like going to clubs, to either dance or listen to a band. I can't imagine dating anyone who doesn't like music.

- I like to cook. I love making dinner for other people. My specialty dishes are chicken stirfry, spaghetti and chicken ala king.

- I like to read – suspense books are my favorite. Harlan Coben, James Patterson and Elizabeth Adler are my favorite authors.

- As far as hobbies go, I like doing crafts and painting ceramics. I’ve also sold my things at craft shows in the past.

- I love the outdoors; camping, hiking, bike riding, walking, and even fishing (dad taught me how to do that as well).

As far as my personality goes:
I’m a bit shy at first, but once you get to know me, I talk a lot. I love to talk on the phone or via e-mail. I’m a good listener. I’m a very spiritual person, but not in a prudish way. I’m pretty easy-going and flexible. I tend to be a bit serious in the beginning, but I really am a lot of fun once you get to know me. I'm very loyal (like a puppy dog) and trustworthy, generous, kind and considerate.

As far as who I would like to meet:
Someone who has been married before, perhaps has children, likes to have fun, likes to go out (I don’t like couch potatoes), has to love music (I’m not much for tube heads); hopefully likes to dance; likes the outdoors; and has a sense of adventure, and a sense of humor.

Ok, that's all about me. Maybe you guys can take what I have told you and you can help me formulate a profile, or just give me some suggestions -- maybe things from my list that I should include, or things I should leave out, or things that I forgot to mention. I'm just not a very good writer. I have to really be in the mood to write to be able to do it well. I really would appreciate the help. Some little voice inside of me is telling me that I need to try this OLD thing.

All suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks.

These are all very good points. You sound interesting and fun!!

The last two paragraphs are good - although I might hesitate to write "I like to talk a lot" - it might be more positive to write - "I enjoy great conversation" because that indicates, as you said, that you do like to talk and listen.

I would find a way to edit down and condense everything into one or two paragraphs. You might want to put yourself on the other side of the table for a minute - what is important to a guy? For example, I might leave out the part about the crafts because that doesn't really impact him.

I would definitely include the sports info - any guy will love that!! And you might want to summarize the movies down to one sentence - for example - I love a variety of movies - scary movies, dramas, westerns, etc. I think it is okay to list 2 or 3 all time favorites. Music and cooking and love of outdoors are good - maybe you can get creative with saying that you are a woman of contrasts - the great outdoors for camping and concerts and the warm and cozy indoors for cooking, reading, crafts hobbies, etc.

Finally, the only red flag I see is the statement about having been married. To me, that sounds like you have issues from a boyfriend who is not - I would take that out and remember it when people write to you - if you see the 40+ man who has not been married you can delete his email. I would leave my options open. But that is just me. I think less is more here.

Also, I would not put anything negative - take out the stuff about "I don't like couch potatoes" and "I'm not much for tubeheads" - those don't sit well with me. If you emphasize that you like to be active and you like music, the people who like those will relate. You can screen out the tubeheads and couch potatoes via email and phone. :-)

I hope this helps!! I am sure others will see and catch things I did not and maybe they will have more good tips, too.

Good luck and keep us posted - feel free to run more edits by us. It is so easy to edit someone else's profile and so hard to write and edit your own.

Judy hit every point I was going to make, and some good one's I hadn't thought of.

Judy and Jennie:

Thanks for your suggestions. I never wrote a profile before, and like I said, I am not the best writer. I was just typing random thoughts. I will take out anything negative. Actually, I'm going to take all your suggestions and try to actuall write a real "profile", and when I'm done, I will run it by you for final inspection.
