SO's not invited to holiday dinner/WWYD?

My company just emailed me the info on our holiday dinner. Its semi-formal and the doctors are hosting it. Spouses and SO's are not invited. I suppose that is to keep down the cost. It is just dinner and a gift exchange at a rather pricey restaurant.

I feel bad that BE can't go. I'd rather that they had it a reasonable priced venue so that we could bring our SO's. But I feel obligated to go. What would you do?

Ugh that would suck and I'd be very annoyed. Its nice and everything that you're being treated to a very nice restaurant....but to not be able to take DH/DW/SO??? That strikes me a very cheap and not cool. I don't have anything to offer advice wise, if I was invited to something and my SO wasn't, and it wasn't a strictly girls night out thing, I prolly wouldn't go. But that is just me. I have been invited to girlfriend's birthday parties where my boyfriend hadn't been "allowed" to go, but other people were bringing their SO's along. I didn't go either. Not the same situation I realize, as what you're facing now, I just find it rude to not involve a person's partner in things like this.

I agree with you whole-heartedly, but because it's work-related, I'd feel obligated to go too.

I wouldn't want to go, but I probably would because like B said you almost feel obligated.

The main problem I have with situations like this is that these are the type of places where work place romances/flings can happen.

ITA about lunch being a better idea. I mean, I don't want to be biting the hand that feeds me, I should be thankful for the dinner and all. But wouldn't lunch out with or without our SO's and a nice little gift certificate for the employees be better? I just don't get why it has to be at a place that so expensive, and at night, drinks served..but without our SOs. I'm not sure how BE will feel...I have not asked him his feelings on it yet.

Plus given the fact that holiday season is already busy, so giving up an evening out WITHOUT your SO is asking a lot, IMHO.

I own my own business, and we hold a lunch for our employees.

Thanks, Pac, but you know, it's the least we can do for them.
