Unprotected Anal...Risk of infection?
| Mon, 11-13-2006 - 1:42am |
Hi there,
I posted about my anal sex experience and some concerns that I had afterwords about the "mess" on an earlier post.
I just need further clarification on the consequences of anal sex that happens unprotected.
I have been with the same partner for 3 years, both of us just have sex with one another. We are both healthy, clean cut, disease/drug free people. We had anal intercourse, he finished in me. When he pulled out, he went right to the shower. (I showered beforehand, but did not clean out with fleet, etc)
What I have been reading on the internet, etc, is it states that men can develop infection from this....even further more possible prostate problems. Is this common? How many times has this happened, if any, in your experiences?
Also, a few days after the encounter, I developed some loose bowels, and and upset stomach. This may have nothing to do with it, I don't know...?
Can anyone provide more feeback that has done this for some time, and can have insight on the consequences of possible infection in the man?
Thanks!
Igrl

Welcome to the board, igrl.
Hi Igrl,
Welcome to the board. Jazz already gave you some great advice. The links below (at the very end) are from another message board at ivillage where a poster was inquiring about abdominal pain and diarrhea following anal---the second link is a poster who was inquiring about how anal sex felt and possible dangers. The links are my responses to these ladies, but you can check out the helpful advice that other users gave them as well by clicking "back" or "next".
As far as the infections and health risks for men go, if a man enters too roughly and without enough lubrication, he'll not only hurt his partner, but himself by basically spraining the structured penis itself and possibly causing tears to his foreskin. Also the possibility of a urinary tract infection is not uncommon especially if you (the receiver) did not eliminate (or did not allow your colon enough time to do self-cleaning if you did eliminate) a couple of hours prior to anal intercourse. Even though there may not be visible pieces of fecal matter on his penis once he withdraws, the head of the penis is still coming in contact with fluids and mucous membranes of the colon, so those fluids can get into the urethra and carry minute pieces of feces with them, thus setting up the perfect breeding ground for an infectious bacteria. This is why it's a good idea for a man to urinate (which can help wash away and kill bacteria) and wash his penis thoroughly soon after anal penetration. The fact that nonvisible fecal matter can be on the penis following anal is also a good reason not to do ATM, as ingesting this material is not healthy and can cause some health issues.
A condom would be a good idea as well, particularly if either of you has or has ever been exposed to the HPV virus which can cause cervical cancer in women/penile cancer in men and colon cancer in both sexes (if the virus is introduced into the colon via anal, or other sexual activity). Also, the condom provides a smoother surface to go into the rectum and can actually make anal sex more pleasurable. So as long as you practice basic hygeine and sanitary guidelines, then you both should be fine. You don't necessarily have to use a condom if the both of you are in a long-term/monogamous relationship, but there are definite benefits to doing so.
Hope this helps.

On the one hand, if the man washes well and pees immediately after, he should be fine. Peeing will get rid of anything that might have made it into the urethra.
On the other hand, wearing a condom effectively eliminates the problem.
DW and I use a condom most of the time for anal (and on toys, for that matter), but if we don't have one handy, we just take pains to wash well afterwards.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are common in men who particpate in unprotected anal sex and especially in those men who are not circumcised. It is important that he cleans up afterwards otherwise the risk of infection increases. I am not saying that if he has unprotected anal sex that getting an infrection is a certainty. However the risk of is definately there.
As for prostrate problems that is something I have not read before about unprotected anal sex. I can see the logic in it but my suspicion is that it would have to relate to an infection that went undiagnosed for a period of time. From personal experience the risk of UTIs in men is much higher than prostrate problems from unprotected anal sex.
