Penpals meet for the first time after corresponding for 62 years

Two women who became penpals as teenagers and spent the next 62 years building their friendship from opposite ends of the world have set eyes on each other for the first time.

In an era of e-mails, texts and instant messaging, Joyce Sims and Waverley Neutze continued to swap news of each other’s families by handwritten letter. Throughout six decades of correspondence they never even spoke by telephone.

The pair finally met on Wednesday after Mrs Neutze, 78, flew from her home in Christchurch, New Zealand, to visit the home in Weymouth, Dorset, of Mrs Sims, 80, and her husband John.
