I have a separate savings account that my mother opened for me, but DH and I have a joint checking account.

I'm now wondering whether everybody has their own bank accounts these days as well as setting up a joint account when they get married.

I do know that a lot of people think that they won't need a separate account. They also want to be open and transparent about what they earn, share the cost of what they spend, etc. They also cite that it's easier for the person managing the couple's finances if everything is in one basket.

I am not in that situation since I am single, but I do like the idea of retaining financial independence, not only to protect oneself in case things go pear-shaped. I mean, we don't blend and become one person when we get married. Personalities as well as personal boundaries don't simply disappear, either. We're still our individuals selves, but having decided to enter into a love partnership, for better and for worse.

It's good for each person to have his and her own account. At any age, whatever the marital status!

I did have two accounts of my own (one that I've had for 20 years, another that I opened at the bank where my car loan was) but I closed one last year.

As I said while I have a separate,
It's still DH's money as well.
That's how I see it anyways, LOL
We've never been a *mine & his*

I think that a lot of couples who have joint and separate accounts are like that, unless they had heaps of their own money and property before the marriage and need to protect these in case something happens.

For my parents and most of my friends it pretty much like you - his, hers, theirs but at the end of the day its all theirs.
