Can Anyone Help Me Start?

I've been a stay at home mom for the last 20 years. For the past 15 of those years I've lived in many different countries due to my husband's job so I did more of the PTA stuff than actually work in all those years abroad. I'm now back in the U.S. with one daughter in high school and another away at college. I am finding myself needing something to do.

We just moved to a brand new home which I am in the middle of decorating. My husband makes a nice salary but said it would be a lot easier if I went back to work. I dread going back into the rat race of an office job and a commute every day. I was thinking about starting some sort of a home business, but I'm not sure what I could do.

I used to be an executive secretary years ago and somewhat enjoyed that. I do enjoy typing, I have decent skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. and basically taught myself everything I know. I thought of maybe a Word Processing business. That might work but I wouldn't know where to begin. I was recently talking to my new neighbor next door who has 2 small children and also wants to start a home business. We both have administrative skills and thought we could even do something together. Is that a good idea?

I am also an exercise nut -- I love home exercise workouts and have an extensive collection of over 200 workouts. My discovery of them 2 years ago has helped me at 49 years of age lose a lot of weight and become the most fit I have ever been in my life! I was once a Weight Watchers meeting leader (that doesn't really pay much) but not crazy about getting up in front of groups of people anymore. I enjoy proper eating and explore many of the healthier options for eating to maintain my weight loss. I don't really know what I could do with that but....

I also like crafts, going to stores like Michaels and buying kits to make things. I'm a bit creative but not to a great extent.

Can anyone give me any ideas? I really need to start something and I have no idea of where to begin. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

Welcome to the board.

There are so many things that you can do from home. What would you really like to do? What are your passions, interests, skills? Just about anything can be turned into a home business. If you start making some lists of these things, some ideas will start to gel in you head. (trust me, this works)

It takes some time to build a business to the point that you are actually earning an income but the reward is worth it. And, if you are doing something that you truly enjoy, it won't seem like working.

Be sure to check out the work at home ideas here at ivillage: http://www.ivillage.com/work/wfh/features/articles/0,10109,187811_258692,00.html

Something there might spark your imagination.

Stop back often. There's always someone with a good idea here on the board.

Hey Daisee!

Welcome to the work at home ranks. I've been bouncing around the ivillage message boards awhile, but I think this is the first time I've posted here.

One thing you might begin to think about is whether you want to start your own biz from scratch or if you're interested in joining a company. There are positives and negatives to both.

There are alot of network marketing companies availabe to choose from. I can think of a few off the top of my head that are involved in health and fitness and some involved with crafts or home decorating too. One of the advantages of working with a company is that you don't have to "reinvent the wheel." You can shop for the one that is right for you.

I don't know as much about starting your own biz from scratch, but I've come across some excellent sights that focus on doing just that. My two favorites are ones that I found mentioned in an article on this sight. The CCH Business Owners Toolkit and The Business Owners' Idea Cafe.

Browse the ivillage articles and try searching for work at home communities. Just be careful of all the scams! Let us know how it goes.

Good luck,

Tishila

Tishila, thank you for all your ideas here. I appreciate your post. What network marketing companies for health and fitness do you know of? I could be interested in that!

Since my post, I've also been hunting around ivillage for more ideas and one that really has me thinking about is a VA (Virtual Assistant). This could be something I'd be very good at with a little brushing up here and there with my skills!

So, I think right now I'm honing in on 2 ideas: the VA or yours on health and fitness because exercise is a real passion of mine.

I hope to hear again from you and in the meantime I will be checking those other sites you mention. Thanks again.

Hi and welcome!

There are a lot of choices. For Health and Wellness, Melaluca is a big one. Just be sure to look into these. There are some with vitamins and such, but anytime you are dealing with someone else's health, you want to be careful.

You could try doing health consulting.

Big Yellow Box might be a good fit. I had looked into it, but decided to stay where I'm at for numerous reasons. But it might be fun.

If you are into decorating, there are numerous home businesses out there for that as well.

To do MT, you need a degree, which you can get from home. Another thing I heard of is Court Reporting. You listen to tapes and transcribe.

Keep us up to date!

I was searching for opportunities to work at home also and I came across a pretty good website. http://www.workathomeagent.com. This is a site where you provide customer service via a call center type atmosphere. You sign up for the times you would accept phone calls and that is about it. I signed up this weekend and I am awaiting a call back. You may apply online and take a survey to see if you fit their profile. I found this site on Wahm.com under business oppurtunities. There was another with similiar requeirements, but they were not accepting agents from Hawaii.

Good Luck and Aloha,

Hello,

I work part-time as a Virtual Assistant and fulltime as an Administrative Assistant. Since you mentioned that you have administrative skills, working as a VA would probably be a good fit for you. =)

It sounds like you have a lot of talents and passions to choose from...

Have you thought about teaching classes at Michaels? That is one of my part-time jobs: I'm a scrapbooking instructor there.

What about Jazzercise? I bet that would be fun! Maybe there is even a center near you where you could teach classes.

You could become a personal trainer.

Congratulations on your weight-loss success, by the way!

Take care!!

Hello,

I just thought I'd comment about workathomeagent.com. I applied for a position there two weeks ago, and received an interview this morning. It sounds like a great way to set your own hours yet still make a decent income. Anyway, they will complete the background check in a week or two, then I start online training. =)

Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke
