I agree --- for tall 46 years of my marriage, the kitchen has ALWAYS been the place where people ended up, whether it was an eat-in or not! Whether it be family of guests, if there is a space in the kitchen to accommodate others, it is the best of all social situations: the cook isn't cut out of the gathering. I personally think this is a major reason for the current interest in great rooms and open plan living spaces... the kitchen and it's function are incorporated into all the activities of the home's "public" places.

I believe kitchens are far more than just functional places to cook, the kitchen is now the focus of modern family living. In terms of adding value a family kitchen with room for a dining table and ideally open to the garden is the most desirable
