I don't know what to do-I have been served with papers today on an outstanding debt for court. We have no money-we are literally living on a shoestring and have no extra money and there is no where to cut back-we have already done this. On top of all of that

Served with paper for what? "Court?" fines, fees, probation? Or is this about a debt you owe?
Contact a attorney, you wont go to jail unless this a a probation thing and your in violation.
What might happen if this is a outstanding debt you owe, there may be a judgment against you. You will not go to jail. they may take you back to court to get a lien on your home or garnish your wages, if your financially strapped the judges many times will not let that happen.
how about filing for bankruptcy?
