Spelling Question

DS is going to have his first spelling quiz on Friday. Last night I was reviewing his words with him, and if I ask him to spell me the word (spell it out loud like a spelling bee) he is right on. However, if I ask him to write the word for me he misses/forgets letters (and still writes certain letters backwards).

Frustrating for everyone involved. Any tips? I am not sure how I feel about making him write them over and over again when 1) I know he despises writing and 2) he does know how to spell them.

I agree that making him write the words over and over is not going to help.

A couple of thoughts:

The first thing might be to just not get that worried about spelling grades in first (?) grade.

Thanks to both of you.

I love the idea of a dry erase board. Think we'll do that tonight.

I have a soft spot for spelling problems. I was a terrible speller until high school. Just the thought of a spelling quiz is enough to send me running and hiding, and I don't want my son to have the same experience with them.

Like another poster, I think to be a good speller, he needs to be able to write the words.

Is his writing corrected for spelling errors? I was just wondering because you stated that he despises writing, and I noticed on another board that most first graders seem to have spelling lists.

My ds6 is in first and they spend a great deal of their time writing. His writing isn't

His writing is corrected for spelling and grammatical errors.

It's too bad that all of his writing is corrected. My ds writes every day, and though he complained about having to write over the summer vacation he was able to write 3 sentences a day about what he was doing. He did correct some of the spelling himself, and his grammer and punctuation are usually good.

He has journals at home, but he mostly creates comic books out of them.
