Judge: Military's ban on gays is unconst

Personally, I agree. I think it forces soldiers to live in double fear - the fear of their own wellbeing and safety in enemy territory, AND the fear of their owne FELLOW SOLDIERS ever finding out who they really are and ousting them, despite their actions and heroism. The deep cameraderie felt by those in life-threatening danger together can never be completely felt by some soldiers, because they have the additional burden of trying to keep some part of themselves secret or be betrayed and ejected by those they are supposed to be trusting with their own lives, and those whose lives they are supposed to be preserving and protecting, too.

Think of how often during a work day you refer to your spouse when talking to your coworkers, and you get some kind of idea of how much you must remain silent if you are a soldier and not heterosexual. You either have to remain aloof, or lie and switch pronouns, nickname your partner with a name of the other gender, etc.

To me, it is little different than requiring all black soldiers to wear pale makeup so their white compatriots would be more comfortable. It is insulting to them, and insulting to the straight soldiers to think they would all have any sort of problem with serving beside gay soldiers. I strongly suspect a WIDE, WIDE majority of soldiers are much too intelligent and progressive to have any such qualms.

To all the soldiers I have known, it does not matter in the least what race, religion, sexual preference you are. You are their BROTHER and SISTER and that's final.
