Bipolar Disorder in adolescents

I am a mental health therapist and am currently working with a family where a 12 yr old girl has bipolar disorder. I am experience in this area but would like to know from others who have personal experience how often do individuals act much younger than their age while living with bipolar disorder or could this individual have another underlying diagnosis. Anyone that can help would be appreciated because I am in need of any information that can help this family.

Hmmm, not sure if my input is what you are looking for or not but I know when I was diagnosed at 17 and put onto lithium my mother often remarked that it was like I went from 12 - 17 rapidly (behaviour-wise). I was very immature before being treated, and was more like a "normal" teenager afterward.
Again, not sure if that is what you are asking about, but I hope it helps. Good luck!

Hi there! Just my own personal experience, I always acted MUCH older than I was. My ds who is 14 is diagnosed with ADHD currently, but I think he is also BP, matured MUCH more quickly than other kids his age too. I don't know about others though. Hope you get some additional responses! Ask any questions you'd like!
Hugs,
Keli
Athough not dx'd BP until my late 40's, looking back I am sure I have been BP since I was in my early teens if not beforeI too have always been much more mature than my age--one of those old souls.
