Is Obsessiveness part of Mania?

I have recently come to this board after receiving a "New and Improved" diagnosis of Bipolar, which I always suspected, from MDD. With the depressive disorder, some of my axiety or odd traits were treated separately such as OCD. But with the correct treatment, my panic attacks, OCD and migraines seem to go away. It seems that some of the little "ticks" that come with Bipolar disorder seem to relate to anxiety. In the past, I become very obsessive about things, such as buying a car, it is all I think about, look for information about and talk about. Or starting a new busienss, I can't concentrate on anything else except this concept. Is this also part of being bipolar? Can I look forward to the obsessiveness easing up with the addition of the mood stabilizer (lamictal in two weeks)? Everyone has been so helpful, when the time comes and I know more, maybe I will be able to help others.

Kristin, I'm not an expert, but I do have some obsessiveness myself. My wood floors, they are my biggest. I sweep them with a broom, then with a swifter, vaccum, swifter again then mop twice then clean rinse them. That is just one thing. Almost everything I do that I do daily, weekly I'm obsessed with. I have been this way for years. If I don't do something the exact way every time I have to re-do it.
Hopefully someone on the board can shed some light on the subject for you. But you aren't alone.

Kristin,
Obsession is deifintely a compenent of mania for me and can take perfectly practical ideas, like the possibility of starting a business off onto wild tangents.
Hello Kristin,
Obsessiveness and fixed thoughts are a symptom of Bipolar Disorder. My son has severe Bipolar Disorder and he has those symptoms. He is also taking Lamictal and it is helping him from extreme mania and depression. Lamictal seems to keep him on an even keel eventhough they say it's not for racing thoughts. Hope that is helpful Good luck.
