Bipolar Disorder from Scarlet Fever

My son was 2 years old (back in 1962) when he had Scarlet Fever. Although he was treated with antibiotics the doctors of that time were concerned about inflamation of the brain. Back then my wife and I didn't know that Scarlet Fever can cause menengitus. Today, at age 45, my son has severe Bipolar Disorder, a chemical imbalance in the brain. A recent brain scan revealed that one side of his brain has less electrical activity than the other side. Naturally, I'm wondering if complications from Scarlet Fever could have caused his Bipolar Disorder? Any thoughts?

That's interesting. I had never considered that bipolar could be caused my a medical illness or a medication until the whole Jane Pauley/prescription steroid thing. I'm sorry I don't have an answer. I hope you find one soon. In the meantime, please be as supportive of your child as possible. Know that he will do and say things that he doesn't really mean when he is manic. Please take any threats of injury to himself seriously. Know where to go to get him treatment in an emergency. Keep his doctors name somewhere safe. Love him as you always have. Amanda
