Does it go away?
| Mon, 12-13-2004 - 7:49am |
I was diagnosed about four years ago. Does it go away? I feel great and have been stable for a year. Should I ask my doctor to start ramping down my meds? I would like to think that with the proper therapy that this wouldn't be a life long condition. Anyone had any luck with alternative medicine?

Bipolar Disorder is a chemical disorder in your brain and does not go away. Be very happy and very grateful that you are stable and feeling good. But don't mess with your meds...you WILL crash...I tried it, and it was ugly. I'm now back on meds, at smaller doses, but on them just the same...I'm stable again for the most part and I will NEVER EVER EVER mess with my meds or try to go off them again.
Just my opinion!

People think they are doing well because they feel well. As a diabetic (this old comparison), if your blood sugar was stable, would you stop taking your insuilin. I have seen very few people go into remission without meds, but with meds, I have a friend who was stable for 20 years (my dream!). Enjoy life, with a little extra help. Best of luck!

Hi there,
No bipolar disorder does not go away. What you are experiencing is stablility and I am very happy you have made it here in your therapy. Please do not play with your meds because that can be really bad for you. You may speak with your pdoc but it sounds like you have found the right meds so I don't see a reason to change them. Sometimes when we are doing well, we forget why, the main reason is our meds are working, so please don't tinker with them because you could find out the hard way(like I did)just how well your meds do work.
Maybe one day there will be a cure but there isn't one yet, so hang in there with us ;)
Hugs,
Carrie
