Dr. wants me off Seroquel..anyone else?

Because of the controversy over the link between Seroquel and diebetes my doctor wants to take me off of it...mainly because my blood sugar levels have been border line high. My look on this is that my fasting sugar test comes out perfect and Seroquel has had many benefits for me. I do need an anti-psychotic, but it has also been a BIG help getting me to sleep more than a few hours a night. I really can't complain that he is not listening to me...he could just take me off all together (though I have a 5 month stock! LOL) but he is giving it a trial run of 100mg less than I take, 200mg instead of 300mg. My biggest fear is that I don't sleep, and then they go take it off the market.

Does anyone here take an anti-psychotic that induces sleep and DOES NOT make drastic weight gains (Zyprexa made me gain 30lbs in a month!! Also can't take Risperdal.). Also wondering how many take Seroquel and in the same position I am in?

I took it for a brief time, primarily as a sleep aid--it worked all right--I'd sleep the clock around, even halving the dosage--when I changed pdocs, she took me off it immediately, because of the diabetes link since I was borderline with lots a family history.

Hi!

I have to have an anti-psychotic too. I was on Zyprexa for a long time. Because of my diabetes it had to go. Had a terrible wieght gain too. Now I am on Geodon. Once I started the weight fell off! (I lost 3 lbs. last week without trying.) It does make me sleep at night just like the Zyprexa did but it's not as sedative during the day. I have lots of energy on it but, it does a great job for the fear, paranoia, anger, etc. that comes along with being manic.

Hope this helps.

Love,

Jamie

I took 800mg of Seroquel daily for close to if not over a year. I gained way too much weight. My pdoc knew of my family history of diabetes and still kept me on it. He is now weaning me off it, it hasn't helped me do anything in my mind other than gain tons of weight and nightmares. I still have several weeks to wean off it, it is a slow process. Hang in there, you'll find something that will help.

Hey Judi...I took Seroquel for about year, then went to Risperdal, then back to Seroquel...not sure about the blood sugar levels though...I'm not diabetic...the Seroquel worked WONDERS in helping me sleep all night...and it did stop any psychotic features of this wonderful disorder we are blessed to have...LOL...but it made me a complete zombie and I was able to come off of it, all A/Ps now that I'm stable.
