Two quick questions...
| Thu, 01-06-2005 - 7:45am |
Hello again.
Sorry to post back to back but I just wanted to ask two quick questions. I have been reading a lot of the posts in here and can certainly relate to many of the episodes some of you have. I was wondering what "cycling" is? I have some vague ideas but would rather not draw any conclusions. Does it mean going from manic to depressive and back again? I believe that is what I am doing at the moment at any rate.
How effective are the meds of today? I am having trouble trying to conceive-I have (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) so I am hesitant to start any major meds. I was on lithium years and years ago, but gained 50 lbs. in 3 months on it so I stopped taking it. I understand their are new ones out now but it looks like women who are TTC need to be more careful.
Thanks for your info!

Pommom,
You've got the cycling right on!
Hi Pommom,
Don't ever worry about how often you post. I'm sure everybody gets sick of me answering all the time...Like I know what I'm talking about. Just keep posting.
Cycling to me is the process of going up or down and the process of going up and down. Does that make sense? So I guess what I'm saying is you are right. Of course I did it in my long winded way.
In my opinion, the meds of today are very effective. It takes time to get on the right combination. The med I'm on now I am looseing wieght on. So that side effect can be worked around. There are times when the meds you're on have to be changed. Say for a side effect or your body just gets used to them and they aren't effective any more. For the most part though there are some real wonder drugs out there. You just have to find yours. The big thing now seems to be the anti-phsycotics, zyprexa, geodon etc. You can google anti-phsycotic (you'll have to correct my spelling though) and you'll be able to find out a longer list or maybe someone here can help you out. These were at first developed for schizophrenics (butchered that sp)and it was discover that they work well and have been aproved as mood stabilitzers for bp. They also use anti-convolsents which seem to work well also. The only one I can think of is depikote. I know my spelling is off on that also. I do suggest you do some research of these drugs so you can go to the doc with some knowledge of what he prescibing for you. That way you can know what you're getting and talk to him about it. My last med change I went in with a list of meds and knew what side effects I would except and what I wouldn't. Zeprexa for one has a primary side effect of wieght gain. I was desparate so I didn't care. Boy did I gain wieght though. Now on geodon it's falling off. I think it's Keli though that can't tolerate geodon. So everyone is different.
I've gone on forever for such a simple question. I hope this helps.
Love,
Jamie
Love,
Hi there. Cycling, at least for me, is the process of my mood going up (mania) or down (depression), or any of the less-severe forms in between. It doesn't apply to the "normal" type ups and downs that everyone has, just the patterns of moods that last for a while.
Meds today are great, but there are a ton of them out there. There are antidepressants, old generation antipsychotics, new generation antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anticonvulsants that have been found to have superb effects as mood stabilizers. Finding the right meds and dosages is, unfortunately, a process of trial and error, and it's very individual.
You need to let your doc know that you are ttc. My dh and I will be ttc again soon as well. There are meds out there that are much safer than others for pregnancy.
You mentioned weight gain and meds. That is a problem with many. Lamictal (mood stabilizer) is considered weight-neutral, causing neither gain nor loss. Topamax, also a mood stabilizer, causes loss in most folks. Many of the other meds cause gain. Prozac, antidepressant, more commonly causes loss. There are way too many to go into. You should definitely talk to your doc about ttc and side effects.
Good luck, and keep posting as much as you like.
