Folks, I wonder if any of you have taken fish oil as part of your therapy. When I was in the hospital in fall of '03, the attendant pdoc started me on fish oil therapy, citing a study in which those that took fish oil did so much better than the control group that they put everyone in the study on it for ethical reasons. Ever since, I have taken three fish oil softgels a day, and have done pretty well. Since, I have moved cross-country to a place with really unpredictable weather and new stressors of other kinds, and landed in the hospital once, but my moods have been very even since they increased my Geodon in the hospital last July.

I guess my own opinion of the fish oil I take is a good one. At least, it seems to be doing no harm, and is good for my low-carb diet. Anyone else have fish oil thoughts they would like to share?

Beth,

I took part in a research study at a med center in Dever CO. Come to find out it was on fish oil. They stopped the study half way through. My part was on a low fat diet. It was horrible! I was broke at the time and barely keeping a roof over my head. They let us go recommending fish oil but, I couldn't afford it then. I had completly forgotten about it. Thanks for the post. I'll be picking some up right away. Thanks again.

Love,

Jamie

I just started reading OmegaRx for the Zone. It mentions when using fish oil for depression or other mental illness, you must take a large dose (10 per day) and it has to be pharmecutical grade, with out all the additives and junk in most fish oil. Of course, this can only be ordered online and can be quite expensive ($50 a month), so I am doing more research. What I have gotten from the book so far is that this large dose can help those taking it in as little as 3 months. I really want to start, but I have to be sure I want to make that kind of committment. My mood stabilizer must be working, because usually I just buy something and don't care!!!lol

There are conflicting thoughts on the dose. My doc said I only needed to take 2-3 capsules a day, and I could just buy it over the counter. Things haven't been perfect, but it really does seem to help.

I think I'll start with over the counter and at a lowwer dose like Beth. Then if that helps think about moving up. I can't remember, for the life of me, what the recommendations were from the clinic. Big help aren't I :).
