Just recently I was officially diagnosed and have started to realize that I would usually go on spending sprees or buy impulsively and now we are $35,000 in debt. So I am working on getting stable, but our finances are just awful and we are about $1,000 short every month. I posted on the debt board, but they all say to get another job or have my dh get another job. Can you say, MANIA? I tried that once and went into a mania. And with two kids under 4 it doesn't pay to work more. So does anyone have any words of wisdom for a hopelessly in debt person. I don't want to declare bancruptcy, but if that is my only alt...

kristin, if i may ask, have you looked into credit management programs? thats what my ex and i did. we were buried so deep that he insisted on bankruptcy and i refused to allow that. the credit management programs are a much better option. you send them x amount every month and they pay your creditors. the payments are reduced from what you normally pay and some credit card companies

Oh Kristin,

I feel so bad for you! I have been blessed with a cheep gene that sends me to a thirft store with $20 when I'm manic. Of course those add up over time too.

I think Traci had a good idea for a place to start. It may just work for you.

Cut up your cards. I have a card for emergencies and it's never been out of my wallet. I wouldn't even have that if my dh didn't insist.

My best friend is over $35,000 in debt and she's been laid off. She is going the bankruptsy route. I do agree with Traci, like I said, her option is a good option if you can swing it.

Kristin,

The debt counseling is the way to go--just be careful, some of them are actually rip offs.
