I am watching CSI right now and the story revolves around 2 bipolar characters (one dead mind you). So far I haven't found anything to scream about, but we'll see.

Anyone else have any encounters of bipolar in the media?

I used to watch ER and Abby's mother and brother were bipolar. I thought this was a pretty good story line. It illustrated all the erratic behavior, problems with meds(Mom wouldn't take her meds with any regularity because she hated the way they made her feel.)
I can relate to this...I feel sluggish, and I hate it. Abby was terrified that she might develop BP because she lived with her mother's personal hell. This storyline is not recent but you might catch reruns on one of the cable networks. The mother was played by Sally Field.

Cindy,

I saw those episodes of ER too...and the story line was positive (as positive as can be with BP) and truthful...BP sucks...I'm really feeling negative today, you'll have to forgive me..I can relate to the meds making you feel sluggish...its just not fair.

I usually watch CSI but, I missed that one! Darn!!!

Sally Fields was was probably really good at play a bp on ER because she is one. If it wasn't for a movie she made on her life I never would have been dx'd. I watched the movie and saw myself!

I saw a Law and Order that had a bp defendent in it.

Ok. So CSI was really good (always is though)

I don't want to give too much away in case anybody sees it in the future and doesn't want to know the ending, but one of the cases was about the bp girl who apparantly committed suicide and they find out here bf is also bp, and the mom is on valium. The moral of the story is that mental illness can make even normies act crazy.

I saw the ER episodes too. I don't know - sometimes I disassociate. I'll read something online and be startled to find that I wrote it. I usually tell myself I don't have a severe case of it but I think I'm crazier than I thought. It has cost me every friend I ever had. You're right - it does suck!

Never even heard of Committed. I too didn't know Sally Fields was bipolar. I personally am quite interested in media portrayals of mental illness among other things. I wonder why I never considered any careers related to media. But I'm going off on a tangent. I will have to check out the NAMI site.

On yet another tangent, I'm making a tshirt (I'm too cheap to buy one and they come from the States so I may have to deal with duty etc) that I saw online. It lists a bunch of BD celebs/important figures and at the end is ...and me. I think it would be a great way to educate people. What do you all think?

I think it's a great Idea about the t-shirt. Sorry you can't order one because of duty charge. They stink! I'm glad your making one. Where did you see them on line? That's definatly something that I would wear too.

I've not heard of commited either. Maybe that a good sign that it will be off the air soon.
