I had to stop wearing high heels in my 30s, except on very special occasions for very short duration, and I am also short.

Can you wear a low heel (1")?

My feet are worn out from wearing heels too. Here are some ideas:
Elongate your look by wearing monochromatic tones—for example grey top and pants or skirt for a longer, leaner silhouette.
Shorten your skirts and dresses to just above the knee if your knees are good or mid-knee otherwise.
Again, keep a long clean line if possible—for example black hosiery, black shoes with a black skirt and black top—you can add color w/ accessories
Nude shoes and a nude leg will help your legs appear longer and will knee high boots
For height and comfort, try a platform shoe.. They are like walking in elevated flats. They are readily available today, and will be very big spring 2010.
A pointy toe shoe, shoes w/ a low vamp (toe cleavage) and fitted boots to the knee will also give your legs a longer look. Chunky shoes and ankle straps will make your legs appear shorter.
Experiment with these ideas and let me know what you think!
I wrote about this and the many closet issues women face in this next part of our lives in my most recent book—What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life. I think you might enjoy!

If the pants are a narrow leg, they can hover around the ankle (think Audrey Hepburn). Otherwise there is no difference in where they should fall if you were wearing a heel. Again, keep the sock or hosiery in the same tone as the shoe or pant for an elongated leg.
