I have a question. Is it extremely difficult to go on permanent disability? Do you get paid a percentage of your former salary or something?

I feel I am no longer able to work. I am on the verge of loosing my job, not to mention my mind. I just can't function anymore. At all. My whole performance has gone down the tubes, it's getting worse by the day, and my employer is getting very annoyed. I was wondering if disability is ever possible or too far-fetched?
Thanks,
Jodie

Jodie,

I'm seriously considering this option myself. I talked to my boss about working from home, I know I could do more there in a comfy enviroment, but they said not yet. I will have to wait 3 years to get my disability from my work. I was also wondering what the percentages were for Federal help too. I just can't keep this up much longer. I feel as if I'm in a bubble and if people get near me I want to either lash out at them or run away. I don't want to be around people, not even my family that I adore.

I'll keep an eye on this post to see if someone can help us. I know it may be different for every state, but the federal guidelines must be close for everyone. I can't check right now, but I'll try some research later.
HUGS!!!! You are NOT alone.

I am not personally on disability, however I know there are people on this site who are. From what I have read, it is not usually an easy or fast process to get disability. I know when my father need to get disability for a different reason (back injury) it took him 5 or 6 years, and MANY lawsuits.

I know I was struggling with the idea of going on disability myself a few years ago, when I first resumed treatment (had spent 2 years job jumping because my BP wouldn't allow me to hold down a job at all) but it wasn't worth it in the long run. You have to have a way to support yourself until it is approved and the time it takes can be excessive.

If you are struggling a lot, you might want to have a serious discussion with your pdoc regarding it. Very possibly the meds you are taking are not the right ones to get/keep you stable and they can remedy the problem with new meds/dosages. If your pdoc is resistance to changing your meds and can't give you a decent reason, GET A NEW PDOC!!!!! Every insurance company has a contract with more then one, and will allow you to change if you aren't satisfied with them.

Good luck to both of you!

Tracey,
Thank you for the heads up, I know my meds need major tweeking. I do not agree however with the pdocs and being able to change. I am unable to change except once a year, that is any doctor. Our insurance is strict, but very good with paying the bills and lowering my med costs. Not all insurance companies are like this, but ours sux when it comes to changing any doc, pcp, hmo, pdoc, tdoc, you name it. You can be referred but only from one doc to another and you can't have more than one referral in a year for pdocs. Totally sux, but if I know what I'm doing "open enrollment" is now and I am in the process of changing all my docs. wish me luck.

I am also currently under infertility treatments which my insurances is also choking on. Which adds to my irritation!

Dear Ladies:

I MORE than understand what you are going through! Work stress is my big trigger and have not bee able to keep a jab fore more than 2 years without having a melt down. The last time was over this past Christmas. My Boss was working me 12 hrs a day with no breaks or lunches and I was just about to break. I went to my PDOC and he recomended a terriffic TDOC. She immediately put me on leave and I filled out State Disability forms. This is the 2nd time I have been on Short-Term Disability.
The forms are VERY easy to fill out...you simply fill out personal info (name, address,social,ect..) then why you are going on leave and the DR. fills out a 1 page description of your condition. Both times there has been NO question from the state of CA as to my need for Disability. Short Term Disability lasts for 1 year, then you can apply for Long Term/Perminate Disability which is Federal. But this is a decision you need to make with your DR. With Federal Disability you can qualify for Medicare. As for $$$ I made $30,000 pre tax at my job and receive aprox $1400 a month from disability. Since I am single and live on my own it is TIGHT, but my parents have been VERY supportive and have been willing to help.
Hopfully this information helps! I will check in and see if you have any more ?'s!

Heather,
Thank you!!! Your info does help. I think WV state disability is different. I have it through my work and it takes months to come through. Shameful, but true. I think I will contact someone to get the ball rolling for me. Pdoc hasn't phoned and I'm literally losing it here.
Hugs!!

I already lost it several times over the last few weeks. Even got hospitalized and taken off in an ambulance twice. :(
I think my co-workers were almost as freaked out as I was. I live in VA. I'll see what they have here.

I too am seeking permanent disability. i tried about a year ago and got turned down. in this chatroom i came across lawyers called ALLSUP as an add right on this board. i called the number and spoke to someone. all you have to do is answer some questions and they do all the rest. they file, they do all your paperwork then they send it to you for you to sign. they even handle any appeals for you. so far its worked out great. they usually advertise at the bottom of your post. check it out or look up ALLSUP thru your browser. i just started the paperwork so no word yet but they told me they have a %95 approval rating.

good luck and check it out!
