Yikes --I don't smoke, but if they took away my Diet Pepsi I would literally lose what mind I have left. :)

I didn't know until I watched Dr 90210 the other night that you couldn't smoke before surgery. When did they start doing that? A friend of mine is a cardiac nurse, and she said people fire up with the heart monitors hooked to them. Also -- what do they do when somebody smokes and has to have emergency surgery? Why did they tell you to stop smoking? I'm just curious.

If you can't smoke, can you use the patch? I remember a Newsradio show where Phil Hartman had used the whole box and had patches all around his waist -- I know -- I watch waaaaay too much TV.

Way to go Valerie! I'm proud of you! (((((hugs)))))

I quit in January. I will be here for you all the way. I'll start posting quit tips in the off topic folder. You can do it!

There is a site that has been helpful to me, but I got in trouble posting it on the kick butt board, so email me.

Love,
Amanda

from what my doc tells me is you should stop smoking if your gonna be under for a long time. which can affect your breathing while your under. plus, they'll tell you anything to get you to stop smoking! (kidding). as far as i know, they've been doing this for a while now. when i had a sugery back in 96' they were doing it. i do believe it may be harder to come out of it (anesthsia), if you smoke.

if its emergency surgery, there isnt much they can do. i think its just precautionary advise.

my doc told me because of all the BP meds and my Diabetic meds, i can't use any smoke cessation products. DH bought me alot of gum. you know its an oral fixation when you smoke, besides the additive effects of the nicotine. i guess thats why i ate a pan of brownies today...(hangs head in shame)

Good luck to you Valerie, I'm thinking of trying to quit when my dh leaves for school next weekend. he is a smoker too so it's hard to quit when he is around because I don't really think he wants to. Keep up the good work!!!!!!

LOL -- I have to do that too! Last summer I had TONS of Ben & Jerry's in the freezer and one day he was being a smart alec after he noticed the ice cream was gone. He told me I was going to get mad cow disease from eating all that ice cream! I can laugh about it now -- LOL. But....Now I ALWAYS replace it if I'm binging - :)
