I am a wreck.... (trigs)....

I am completely obsessing about my weight. I have spent several days crying over it.My depression makes me eat more which only adds to it. I need help getting out of this depression. I have been on effexor for a year and complained that it does not help. Why won't anyone listen to me about it. I am debating asking doctor to let me try topamax to see if I can stop eating constantly. Has anyone tried it and with what other drugs? I am on abilify and pdoc is talking about increasing the dosage can I even take topamax? If I get out of the depression with new A/D is there a chance I will stop eating? Please tell me there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for letting me vent.
Missy

Okay, let's see...
First, hugs.
Second, I also eat constantly when I'm depressed. I know, it sucks. Then you get more depressed and that makes you eat more...etc
If your AD isn't working then by all means be firm with your dr about changing that.
Topamax is not an AD though. And dr's won't just prescribe it for that side effect.
I don't know about the specific drug interactions either. Also something to talk about with the doc.
I definately think that if you get out the depression that will help the eating. If the depression feeds it then it only makes sense.
Sorry I'm no help.
For sure tell your doc that your AD is not helping AND that you are worried about appetite/weight. If it's a side effect then changing the meds could help. (that was one of the cases i went through) another was when I started on epival I said that if I gained weight I will freak and she knows that means I'll just stop taking them without tapering properly so we keep an eye on that.
hi missy,
i don't know anything about the topomax either, but i agree with amanda. for some people depression tends to make you eat. the eating will make you more depressed, and the cycle continues.
if you don't think your current a/d is working talk to your doc and be firm. i don't know if you are on anything other than the effexor and ambien, but if the you feel the effexor isn't helping, then keep after pdoc.
for some reason, i'm thinking (and could be totally wrong) that keli, at some point was on topomax. maybe, if i'm right, she'll answer you as soon as she is able. until then, hang in there and keep posting. know we're thinking of you.

Amanda and Traci - Thank for the responses. I am going to try to be more firm about the effexor. I have told her every visit since I started in March that it has not worked for the last year, but she was trying to get my moods stablized first. I am on abilify for that. It has helped a ton, but I now clearly see the depression. Hopefully she will change it on Thursday.

I know that she wants to stabilize your moods first, but being on a med that doesn't work is not going to help that. If she doesn't see that point just tell her you are not going to take the med anymore and if she is not going to help you taper properly you are going to stop yourself. That will get them every time.
Good luck. Let us know how it goes

Missy,
I know exactly how you feel about the weight thing.
I'm also dealing with weight issues. is wasnt until i started Lithium. im gaining and im not even eating anything different than what i was eating before. ive gained about 15lbs in 2 months! when i get hungry, i grab an apple or orange, we have nothing but healthy food in the house. im not that active but i do walk the dog. i know most of my weight is due to gynocological problems, which i hope will be solved with the surgery. i can't excercise because it bring on abodminal pain...etc etc.
how the heck am i gaining wieght without over eating?

Actually, I learned a little about Lithium when I started my current diet.
WOW!! thanks...i needed that!
