I KNOW that this is probably going to result in some flaming responses to me and some people will be HIGHLY offended. BUT, I have to say my 2 cents worth.
IMHO there has been WAY too much made of Tom Cruise's comments the other day. Yes, they were irresponsible and wrong. Yes, they could be detrimental to someone who is easily influenced by others.
HOWEVER, there are MANY religions that feel as Tom stated. It isn't just scientology. Every so often you will even hear about some child dying because their parent's wouldn't allow them a minor medical procedure that violated their faith. EVERYONE is allowed to have their opinions and beliefs. While they shouldn't try to shove them down our throats, they also shouldn't be persecuted for them. I was a bit stunned at how vehemently some people responded. I think some people even were wishing that he or someone close to him would become ill with a mental illness. That is inconceivable to me, wishing that on ANYONE.
I think that Tom was out of line getting belligerent with Matt Lauer (sp?) about his "facts" on psychology and mental illness and the treatments of it. Having said that, this is GREAT free press for Tom and everything related to him. Bad press IS almost as good as Positive, and this is free! Just on our board alone there are 5 or 6 posts all about Tom. Yes, there is a petition against seeing his movie. Of course, just like boycotts of books and CDs, this will drive several people who didn't have any desire to see the movie out to it, wondering what all the fuss is about.
As I said, I agree he was out of line. I just think this is getting a bit ridiculous. We vented about it. Don't go to his movies or rent his videos. That's your choice. But what's next? Are we going to line him up and stone him??
I'll get off my soapbox now. Had to vent.

Tracey,
If he had just stated it as merely his belief, whether based on Scientology or whatever, I don't think there would be such a fuss (I know I wouldn't have been happy, but would not gotten upset like this has done).
While I have stated my opinions on the matter, the cruxt of it seems to come down to his over-inflated ego and religion, or differences of opinions thereof. This is why I do my best, at least when I'm on top of my game, to stay out of topics of that nature. Albeit it's been a while since I've been on top of my game. LOL! But, I have always felt that 2 things that should never be seriously discussed among friends and loved ones are religion and politics. I've seen more friendships lost and relationships severed as a result of differences of opinions that I pretty much try to stay out of them.
Yes, this particular situation got my goat. But, for the most part I really try to stay out of stuff like this for the very reasons you list. I don't think any ill of you for stating your opinions for what it's worth:) Have a great day!

I tend to agree with Tracey.
stoning huh? sounds good to me:) LOL! As I said, what you said wasn't offensive to me. Plus, a little spark of controversial subject matter is good for us every now and then......keeps us "fresh" if you will. Have a great day!
