My 15 year old son has been dx with Bipolar and is currently in a treatment center.
I know you are reeling right now, but be thankful he was correctly dx'd so quickly--many BP folks go misdx'd with just depression for years and the earlier treatment is started usually means much more easily stabilized and controlled.
One of the best things you can do for him is learn as much about BP as possible--this will help you understand what's going on with him, but also will help you recognize the signs that his mood is about to swing, as well as helping him learn & avoid his personal "triggers".
Marci is absolutely right. With your son receiving the diagnosis so early, he stands a good chance of stabilizing quickly! I was dx'd this past December and have just recently started achieving stability with the meds, but I'm still not "there" yet. My 15 yo dd was dx'd 2 months later and as long as she remembers her meds, is doing great! I guess the difference of an earlier dx is definitely evident.
It does turn one's life upside down before we know what we are dealing with, but thank goodness your son has a mom that cares and found him the help he needed when he was in crisis. Knowledge is a wonderful tool and the sites Marci gave you are filled with it. We also are here to provide support and answer any questions we can to help you and your son.
Welcome to the board!
