Could he be bipolar?

My husband has incredible mood swings - sometimes so quick my head spins. One minute we're joking and laughing, the next, something triggers this huge change in him - something I said or something one of the kids do. Then he's all down and telling me that nothing in his life is right, that he should just kill himself so that everyone will be able to go on with his life...yadda, yadda, yadda. Whenever he gets angry at something, his first response is that he's going to kill himself because he's tired and "fed up" with everything. He'll be like this for a few days - frequently going on and on about how he should kill himself , about how sorry I'll be when he does, etc. This usually lasts for a few days then he's fine - once again laughing and joking. This roller coaster is killing me. I feel like I'm the one that's going to go off the deep end. He was diagnosed with major depression about 12 years ago but he refuses to stay on his meds. I'm beginning
to think that he needs lithium rather than an antidepressant. I'm also not sure how to respond to him when he leaves the house saying -"I won't be home tonight - or any other night -tell the kid sI love them". My first reponse is to run and grab him and not let go but he would NOT be receptive but the other part of me feels that this would be one way to end this miserable marriage (he refuses divorce). Any support or advice would be greatly appreciated.
