Question for you all -
Does Lamictal cause weight gain? Is it FDA approved for the use of Bipolar Disorder? What experiences have you had with this medicine?
I'm already taking Lamictal, but these are just some questions that I've had lately. I've had trouble with my weight and was wondering if lifestyle changes would even help. I do need to exercise and eat less sweets, but if I do this will being on Lamictal prevent me from losing pounds?
Thanks,
Beth

Hi Beth, long time no hear from! Lamictal is finally approved by the FDA for Bipolar disorder. Its a mood stablizer with antidepressant properties. It takes a pretty long time to kick in though, and you have to watch for the rash. How long have you been taking it? I got the rash pretty quickly on it, so I don't know anything about how well it works, and nothing about weight gain, though I have HEARD that it can cause a gain. But most of the psych meds can.
How are you doing otherwise?
Hugs,
Keli
Well I was going to copy/paste some info for you, but the website puts the info in acrobat, and won't let me.
God could not be everywhere, so
Hi Beth,
I take Lamictal and I do believe it has caused me some weight gain... but then again, I was depressed, so I was probably overeating too..
Everything I've heard though, says that you should be able to lose the weight with lifestyle changes... It may be a little harder, but it is possible...
Most of the BP medicines cause some weight gain, but not unlimited weight gain (otherwise we'd all weigh a thousand pounds! LOL!)

(((((Beth)))),
You were one of the people who I knew was MIA, but with my flakey memory I couldn't remember your name or ID.
i didn't gain any weight on lamictal.
From what I've looked up just googling around on the internet, everything has said that Lamictal doesn't cause weight gain. I have been eating much more lately since going off Wellbutrin and starting the Lamictal so I wanted to check!! However, I am thinking it may be because I have been depressed (my new doc switched me off the Wellbutrin because he doesn't think it's what I need-he suspects I am Bipolar II) and I haven't been going to the gym & have been sleeping WAY too much. I definitely want to give this a try & they say if you start slowly enough you shouldn't get the dreaded rash. I guess it's just wait and see.
Hugs!!
