I've heard that addicts can never attain that initial high....they just don't realize it so keep shooting for it.

Wishes I think you are most likely grieving deeply for your mother and that is why addictions suddenly feel good to you.
Often times addictions are fueled by losses and depressions caused by many things in life that are so difficult to bear.
