just DXed ADD w/"possible mood disorder"
| Fri, 12-16-2005 - 8:37am |
hello, I am new to this board, but not to iVillage.
I was being evaluated for ADD (which I knew I have) and my psych now thinks than in addition, there may be more going on. A 'possible mood disorder'. (which, if I think about it, is probably better than an 'impossible mood disorder ;) ).
I guess I have some questions. What possible mood disorders are out there, other than BPD?
Has anyone here been DXed ADD & BPD?
What does BPD feel like?
TIA
-Paula

both myself and dd are add/hd.
God could not be everywhere, so
paula - donna is right. there are so many mood disorders that pdocs hesitate to label you with one right away.
my pdoc didn't dx me for quite some time. and even now my meds are a disaster. but give your pdoc time to work with you and find a med or meds that work for you.
like donna said, even if you aren't bp you are more than welcome to stick around. there are several women here who are very supportive and offer very good advice.

Donna,
Thanks for the welcome. I think we met on the ADD board. I will stick around for a bit. My sister was just DXed manic depressive (those English Drs don't beat around the bush), so we shall see...

I thought your name looked familiar !!!!
isn't manic depressive what they used to call bp?
God could not be everywhere, so
Some sites seem to act like BP and MD are the same thing, some seem to imply that BP is milder and MD more severe. I don't know. It could be a UK/USA thing as my sister is in the UK...
She is disputing the DX, BTW...

paula - bp has two "recognized" categories and 2 or 3 other categories that are very mild forms and not recognized by the "big book" (the dsm IV) that docs go by to diagnose. bpI is md. bpII is a less severe form with the mania being milder. mixed episodes and cyclothymia are on the outer edges of the spectrum being very mild.
i used to be all hung up on the dx when my pdoc first started throwing the term around because no matter which name is used, mental illness is not viewed upon well in my community. depression is about as much as anyone will accept and then they expect us to just 'snap out of it.'
my tdoc and the ladies here all got me to see that no matter what the dx, as long as i get on the right meds that's all that matters. people outside don't have to know what is going on with me, especially if i'm behaving 'normally' by being on the right meds. currently this part is my biggest problem but am taking steps to fix that by going to a new pdoc in early january. of course, that could yield a totally different dx, but at this point if the woman can get me on meds that work i really don't care what she calls what i've got.
i've been fighting with getting the right meds and doses for a year now. back in september i got as close as i'd ever been, but it was short lived and pdoc messed with my meds again and i crashed and never got it back and just kept getting lower and lower. so tdoc finally asked me last week if i'd consider a second opinion. well, at this point it can't hurt.
maybe the dsm-iv isn't used in britain. not sure. i do know that pdocs in the states refer to bipolar as what used to be known as manic/depressive illness. so i don't know what britain's criteria are. hopefully, whatever the dx turns out to be your doc will get you on the med(s) you need to get you back on track. that's what's important.
keep posting and let us know how you are doing.
